Jennifer Nebesky and Marissa Lukaitis Join Mansfield Communications

Jennifer Nebesky and Marissa Lukaitis have joined Mansfield Communications as Vice-President, Operations and Senior Account Director respectively. Ms. Nebesky will directly manage the Canadian operations of Mansfield Communications and will be responsible for expanding their client base through new business development initiatives. Ms. Lukaitis, who will be based in Mansfield’s new Ottawa office, will be responsible for managing account teams and providing strategic counsel on multiple agency accounts, as well as having significant involvement in new business development.

Prior to joining Mansfield, Ms. Nebesky was Vice President and General Manager of Thornley Fallis Communications where she was responsible for business development and managing a wide range of strategic communications plans for the firm’s business and health care clients.

Ms. Nebesky began her career in communications at Bayer where she was responsible for media relations and internal communications during the re-launch of the company’s brand in Canada. Ms. Nebesky has also taught media relations at Seneca College in the Corporate Communications program.

Before joining Mansfield Communications, Ms. Lukaitis was Account Director at Thornley Fallis Communications where she was responsible for providing strategic project planning and management, execution of communications plans and strategies, and measurement of targeted communications programs to her consumer and health care clients.

Ms. Lukaitis began her career at a Montreal based public relations agency, where she focused on the development and execution of several public education programs for key pharmaceutical corporations. Subsequently, Ms. Lukaitis worked as a communications consultant with the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, where she provided strategic counsel and support to a key Continuing Care e-Health project.

Over 90% of fellow employees do not want you to come to work with any H1N1 flu symptoms

91 percent of Americans said they want their co-workers to remain at home if they are infected with the H1N1 flu virus according to a national survey released today by Mansfield Communications. And if you are considering going into work with the flu or symptoms of, 83 per cent of your co-workers say they are likely to inform a fellow colleague or senior management about a colleague in their workplace whom they think might be showing symptoms of the flu.

The survey, commissioned by Mansfield Communications Inc., interviewed 2,029 Americans with a subset of 1,232 full time and part time working Americans from October 5thth 2009 thru October 11th, 2009. It was intended to continue to gauge the readiness of workers and their employers for the H1N1 (swine flu) pandemic. The margin of error is +/- 2.2%, 19 times out of 20.

“As the number of people infected with H1N1 continues to grow, parallel fear escalates and the potential for mob mentality begins to take shape,” said Rob Ireland, partner at Mansfield Communications Inc. “By having clear and definitive H1N1 policies & procedures in place and by becoming a trusted source of related information, leading companies can truly take care of their greatest asset – their employees.”

According to a survey conducted last month by Mansfield Communications, 69 per cent of workers said they had received no communication about policies in the workplace pertaining to H1N1. The poll also found that a large majority (84%) of American workers believe the recession creates more pressure to show up for work— even if they are feeling sick.

Approximately half (47%) of the respondents said that they would still engage in public activities (such as riding the bus, picking up a prescription or grocery shopping) even when they were infected with H1N1 and required to stay home from their office due to a company-imposed quarantine.

However the most current findings indicate awareness about the serious nature of the virus is on the rise as workers show concern for containing the spread of H1N1.

Added Ireland: “Employers need to be vigilant in maintaining open communication with their employees during flu season and monitoring employee compliance with the organization’s sick leave policy.”

Additional survey findings:

94% of women believed that coworkers should not come into the office if infected with the H1N1 flu virus, while fewer men (88%) felt the same way.

84% of respondents between the ages 18-54 were likely to report a colleague who had symptoms of the flu. While fewer respondents ages 55+ and older (77%) were likely to report their coworkers’ for being ill at the office.

Most Americans Lacking Direction from their Employers for the H1N1 Flu Season, Survey Shows

84% of employees feel pressure to show up for work when sick due to the current economy.
New York, September 21, 2009 – Most workers have not had any direction from their employers about the upcoming flu season, according to a national survey released today by Mansfield Communications Inc.
In the survey of a national representative sample, 69 per cent of respondents say they have received no communication about policies in the workplace pertaining to H1N1— not even information related to hand washing or sick leave.

The survey, conducted by Angus Reid Strategies for Mansfield Communications Inc., interviewed 1,028 workers from Sept. 10th 2009 thru Sept. 12th 2009. It was intended to gauge the readiness of workers for the pending H1N1 pandemic. The margin of error is +/- 3.1%, 19 times out of 20.

The poll found that a large majority (84%) of American workers believe the recession creates more pressure to show up for work— even if they are feeling sick.

“Many workers are understandably concerned about how absenteeism due to sickness will impact their job security in the current economic environment. However, sick employees coming into the office during the H1N1 flu season will undermine the health and productivity of the entire workplace,” said Rob Ireland, partner at Mansfield Communications Inc.

“Employers need to clearly communicate with employees about such things as extended sick leave policy and procedures to minimize the spread of infection. During a pandemic, employers must become trusted sources of information and help employees make the right choices.”

The majority of the workers surveyed (80%) felt they were knowledgeable about precautions that should be taken if the virus reached their workplace. Yet approximately half (47%) of the respondents said that they would still engage in public activities (such as riding the bus, picking up a prescription or grocery shopping) even when they were infected with H1N1 and required to stay home from their office due to a company-imposed quarantine.
“The gap between professed knowledge and practice is alarming,” said Ireland. “Nearly half of respondents said that they would continue to engage in public activities with full knowledge of their infection. Clearly, there is much to be done to educate America’s workforce and help people act appropriately in order to contain the spread of H1N1.”

Additional poll findings:

When asked how concerned they were about the H1N1 Virus, approximately 50% of workers rated their concern a six or higher on a scale of 1-10.

When asked if they planned to get vaccinated if a vaccine was made available this fall, 49% of all respondents said yes and 51% said no.

When asked about public activity while infected, 52% of men said that they were either somewhat or very likely to engage in it, while 43% of women said the same.
